Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.”

As I read not only this verse but the verses prior in which Jesus tells us how to love our enemies, I am convicted by the words He speaks. He tells us to love our enemies; to love those that do not love us. Jesus wants us to do good to them, to pray for them, to give them what they need, to do all the things that would be easy to do for our closest and dearest friend. But the challenge lies essentially in loving those that hurt us and attack our character. Loving our enemies is not something we can do out of our own strength. I believe this love and the actions that go with it, come solely from the love of Jesus. He lives in us and tells us we can do all things through Him that strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). As believers we are filled with the Holy Spirit and He empowers us.

Jesus loved His enemies. He set the example for us as He hung on the cross and was mocked, ridiculed and wounded. At the point of death, He asked His Father to forgive them. He extended nothing but love to those that were so cruel to Him.

If I look at this point in time of Jesus’ life and how He forgave those that persecuted Him, and I look at my own “enemies” it should be easy to love them. How can I compare my enemies to Jesus’s enemies? But honestly, it’s a struggle and my flesh always gets in the way. I know that it’s God’s love that will empower me. As much as I want to say that I have forgiven and loved those that have come into my path and caused harm, I must say it is a work in progress. I know that I am the first one that does not merit God’s favor yet he freely pours out his grace and love on me. Because of the love that Jesus has for me, I must love my enemies. His radical love needs to be at the forefront of my mind and heart.

That’s a big question and a good question for people to ask. Here is a story that shows clearly that God listens to us. The angel comes to Zacharias and says, “Your prayer has been heard…” It’s truly amazing that God listens but our God does more than listen, He takes action. He answers when we call. When God gives an answer, will we believe it? Will we act? This life is a partnership with God. He is in control but by His kindness He gives us a part to play. God had every intention to bring John into this story, but he gave Zacharias and Elizabeth a part to play as well. I find comfort in the fact that even though Zacharias doubted, God still fulfilled His promise. When we are faithless, He is faithful! When you cry out, He turns His ear to listen and acts in love toward you.

Questions:

What are you crying out for in this season? About 23 years ago, as a first-time mom with my baby girl crying in her car seat, I remember thinking, “18 more years until she’s an ‘adult’”. It seemed like an eternity! I was just getting started, I was experiencing sleepless nights, constant feedings, days that seemed like a whirlwind – I couldn’t imagine 18 more years! Yet, here we are, 18 years have come and gone...it’s been filled with birthdays, graduations, a soon-to-be wedding and many day-to-day blessings. What have I done with the time that God has given me? I hope I have poured into, not just her, but those people that God has put in my path. I know God has used me, as that has been my desire but I also know that there have been plenty of times that I have resisted. Looking back and rereading this portion of scripture, it’s a good reminder of what I am going to do as I wait for the Lord. How I am living my life for Him and what does that look like?

My daughter is now 23 and will be getting married soon, and I have no regrets about having been a stay-at -home mom. No regrets about missing a shower now and then or wearing the same sweatpants for a period of time. Living that season of life that God blessed me with was a period of growth for me. Looking back, that season flew by!

Sometimes seasons or periods in our lives seem long. They’re uncomfortable, painful, we may even feel non-productive. But God is with us! He stretches us and hopefully, we grow. His concept of time is different. His perception of EVERYTHING is beyond our comprehension. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord (Isaiah 55:8). Let’s embrace the time God has given us, let’s aim to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and share that knowledge.

The day before, Jesus miraculously fed five thousand men and probably around 15 to 20 thousand people with only five loaves and two fish. He taught the people all day, and at night when he should have been sleeping, he stayed up and prayed to his Father. He then was seen walking on water and calming a raging storm. As the morning dawned, the silence of seclusion was broken as the same crowds from the day before quickly discovered where Jesus had gone and once again came to him.

It’s in this context that Jesus tells the people in verses 26 and 27 “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.”

In verse 33, Jesus then tells them what that food is. It’s Him! You see, we can’t really blame the people for wanting to be comfortable and to want to have more food! Wouldn’t we do the same if we were there? But Jesus, as He does so often, uses this opportunity to point the people to what they really needed to hear, and to what is true. He makes a bold claim and says in verse 35, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

Jesus knows that whether 2000 thousand years ago, or today, we are all searching for what can lead to true satisfaction in our lives, and the only thing that will ever be able to do that, is knowing and walking with Jesus! Maybe reading this today you find yourself seeking to be satisfied with bread and fish, or entertainment, or more money... Jesus so lovingly is reminding us, that only He satisfies. Let’s hold him to that promise, and dive in deeper to that well that will never run dry!

And go, get to the captives, to the children of your people, and speak to them and tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD,’ whether they hear, or whether they refuse.’”

I find it hard to acknowledge some of the things that God is trying to speak into my life because they go against everything I want Him to say to me. This reminds me of the times when I clearly heard my Dad call out to me, telling me to take out the trash, but I refused by pretending not to hear him. But whenever He would call out saying “dinner is ready”, I’d be at the table in a heartbeat. I fear that this is what I’m like with God as well, and the reality is, we all are, to some extent. We pick and choose what we hear from Him based on convenience and comfort rather than obedience to Him.

We may know what’s wrong, but refuse to flee from it (Adam and Eve). We may know God’s word, but refuse to follow it (Satan). We may know God, but refuse to acknowledge Him in all that we do (Proverbs 3:5-6). The sad part is, hearing from God based on convenience rather than obedience leaves us out of two key things in our life. The first being; understanding God’s beautiful plan for us, and two; growing in our knowledge of who our amazing God really is.

In Ezekiel 3 this is the problem the Israelites we’re dealing with. They heard from God, but refused to acknowledge Him. They refused to receive any of His correction and warning because they were comfortable in their sin. They shut God out of their thoughts and convictions because they knew that if they didn’t, there were things in their life He would want them to change. This caused them to be strong in their convictions, but not strong in God’s convictions. This is a scary place to be.

And yet sometimes, we’d rather ignore what God is telling us, because we fear what He will reveal about ourselves more than the freedom of being led by Him. This is why one of the most scary, yet freeing things to pray is this “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalms 139:23-24)

I think the key part of that prayer in Psalms is the end which states “and lead me in the way everlasting” because sometimes we fear so much of what God sees in us that we forget about how God sees us. Yes there may be areas we need to change. These areas could be a sin issue like David with Bathsheba or a directional change like Jonah. Either way, God only wants to change these areas in our life because He loves us, wants us and has something better for us than the current place or state we are in. God doesn’t speak into our lives to be a bully, God speaks into our lives to “lead us in the way everlasting” because He wants what’s best for us. And what’s best for us is our relationship with Him. So when God speaks to us, do we refuse what He is saying because we fear what He wants to change in our lives for our own good?
